Preventative Dental Care

Strong Smiles Start With Smart Prevention

The best dental care is the kind that keeps your child out of the chair, except for the visits they actually enjoy. Our preventative dental care program is designed to do exactly that: catch problems early, stop cavities before they start, and help every child build the kind of oral health habits that follow them for life.

At Turley Dental, preventative care isn't just a checkbox. It's the foundation of everything we do, from your child's very first tooth to the day their braces come off.

Strong Smiles Start With Smart Prevention

We know life gets busy. Between school, sports, and everything else, a dental checkup can feel easy to push to "next month." But the research is clear: children who receive regular preventative care have significantly fewer cavities, fewer dental emergencies, and far less anxiety about dental visits as they grow up.

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) recommends that children visit a dentist by their first birthday, or within six months of their first tooth appearing. Starting early means we can catch issues before they become problems and before your child ever has a chance to develop dental fear.

Early preventative visits also give Dr. Patricia Turley and our team a chance to spot signs of developmental concerns, things like bite alignment, jaw growth, and spacing, that can be addressed more easily now than later. When your child's pediatric care and orthodontic care happen under the same roof, those conversations happen naturally, at the right time.

Our Preventative Dental Care Services

We offer a comprehensive range of preventative services designed to meet your child at every stage, from that very first visit to the confident, cavity-free smile they'll carry into adulthood.

Dental Exams & Cleanings

Professional cleanings every six months are the cornerstone of preventative care. Our gentle hygienists remove plaque and tartar buildup that home brushing can't reach, while Dr. Turley performs a thorough oral exam to assess your child's dental development and catch any early concerns. We take our time at every visit. That means no rushing, no guessing, and no surprises. If we do find something, we'll explain exactly what it is, what it means, and what, if anything, needs to happen next.

What's included in every exam & cleaning visit:

●     Full visual oral exam, including teeth, gums, jaw, and bite

●     Professional plaque and tartar removal

●     Tooth polishing

●     Age-appropriate oral hygiene coaching for both child and parent

●     Developmental assessment to monitor growth milestones

●     Digital X-rays when clinically indicated

Fluoride Varnish & Duraphat Treatments

Fluoride is one of the most proven, effective tools in preventative dentistry, and it's painless. After every cleaning, we apply a fluoride varnish to help strengthen tooth enamel and protect against cavity-causing bacteria.

We use Duraphat fluoride varnish, a high-concentration fluoride treatment that is safe, fast-acting, and trusted by pediatric dentists globally. The application takes just minutes and dries quickly; kids can eat and drink normally very soon after. Fluoride varnish is especially important for:

●     Children with a history of cavities or decay

●     Kids with deep grooves or pits in their molars

●     Children who consume a diet high in sugars or acidic foods

●     Patients undergoing orthodontic treatment with braces

Dental Sealants for Cavity Protection

Cavities love to hide in the grooves and pits of back molars, the very teeth kids use most for chewing. Sealants are a thin, protective coating painted directly onto the chewing surfaces of permanent molars to seal out food and bacteria before cavities can form.

The procedure is completely non-invasive: no drills, no needles, no discomfort. Sealants are applied in minutes and can protect teeth for up to 10 years with proper care. For children who are prone to cavities, sealants are one of the most cost-effective preventative investments you can make. We typically recommend sealants when:

●     Permanent first molars erupt (around age 6–7)

●     Permanent second molars erupt (around age 11–13)

●     Teeth show deep grooves that are difficult to keep clean

●     Your child has a history of cavities or is at higher risk

Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF) — Non-Invasive Cavity Control

Sometimes, early decay is spotted in baby teeth or in a child who needs a gentler approach before they're ready for a traditional filling. That's where Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF) comes in.

SDF is a brush-on liquid that stops active tooth decay in its tracks — without drilling, numbing, or stress. It's quick, painless, and remarkably effective for managing early cavities, especially in younger children or those with dental anxiety. SDF is a great option for:

●     Toddlers and young children who aren't ready for fillings

●     Baby teeth with early-stage cavities

●     Children with anxiety who need a graduated approach to care

●     Patients with special healthcare needs

We'll always discuss whether SDF is right for your child and what to expect, including the cosmetic appearance of treated teeth, so there are no surprises.

Sports Mouthguards — Protection on the Field

Active kids need active protection. A custom-fitted mouthguard from Turley Dental is the best way to protect your child's teeth, lips, and jaw during sports. Unlike store-bought versions, custom mouthguards fit properly, stay in place, and don't interfere with breathing or communication.

We recommend mouthguards for any child participating in contact or collision sports, including soccer, basketball, baseball, martial arts, cycling, and skateboarding. If your child wears braces, a properly fitted mouthguard is especially important, and we'll make sure it works with their orthodontic appliances.

The Turley Difference: Pediatric Care & Orthodontics Under One Roof

Here's what makes Turley Dental genuinely different from a standalone pediatric dental office: when we spot early signs of crowding, bite concerns, or jaw development issues during a preventative visit, the right conversation happens immediately. You don't need a referral, another office, or a second opinion. Our orthodontic specialists are right here.

That kind of seamless coordination means your child gets care that's thoughtful, connected, and always looking one step ahead. It's the reason families from Manhattan Beach, El Segundo, Hawthorne, Redondo Beach, and Torrance keep coming back, and why so many have trusted us with two generations of smiles.

Preventative Dental Care at Every Stage

Every age brings new milestones and new dental needs. Here's what to expect as your child grows:

Infants & Toddlers

(6 Months – 3 Years)

Start early, start right. Your child's first dental visit should happen by their first birthday or within 6 months of their first tooth appearing. We'll check for early signs of tooth decay, talk through teething and diet, and make sure your little one has a positive, pressure-free first experience in the dental chair.

●     First tooth → first visit

●     Assessment of nursing and bottle habits

●     Guidance on baby bottle tooth decay prevention

●     Teething discomfort and eruption expectations

School-Age Children

(4 – 10 Years)

This is when preventative care really pays off. Permanent teeth begin arriving around age 6, and the habits formed now, along with sealants, fluoride varnish, and regular checkups, will shape your child's dental health for decades.

●     Bi-annual professional cleanings and exams

●     Dental sealants on erupting permanent molars

●     Fluoride varnish applications

●     Orthodontic screening for early intervention if needed

●     Thumb-sucking and pacifier habit guidance

Tweens & Teens

(11 – 17 Years)

Teenagers face unique dental challenges: hormonal changes, sports participation, braces, and, let's be honest, inconsistent brushing habits. Preventative care during these years protects the investment you've already made in their smile.

●     Continued bi-annual cleanings and exams

●     Custom sports mouthguards

●     Preventative care coordination with active orthodontic treatment

●     Whitening-safe hygiene guidance

●     Digital X-rays to monitor wisdom tooth development
