Your Braces Guide

Daily Life with Braces

Adjusting to braces takes a little time, but with the right habits and tips, you’ll be living — and smiling — with confidence in no time. Here's what to know about caring for your braces and staying comfortable every day.

Keeping Your Smile Clean

Maintaining great oral hygiene with braces is essential to keeping your teeth healthy and your treatment on track.

You should brush after every meal using a soft-bristled or electric toothbrush, taking extra care to clean around each bracket and along the gumline.

Flossing can take a little more time, but using floss threaders or orthodontic flossers makes it easier to reach between teeth. Many patients also find that a water flosser is a helpful tool to rinse away food particles and keep their mouth feeling fresh.

Finishing up with a fluoride rinse can help strengthen enamel and protect against cavities — a smart step for any braces routine.

Eating Smart

Braces don’t mean boring snacks — just smarter choices!

❌ Foods to avoid:

  • Hard, sticky, or chewy foods (gum, popcorn, nuts, hard candy, taffy)

  • Biting into hard items like apples or crusty bread (cut them into small pieces instead)

✅ Braces-friendly snacks:

  • Yogurt, soft fruits, smoothies, pasta, scrambled eggs, steamed veggies, and more!

Comfort & Care On the Go

It’s normal to feel a little soreness after getting your braces on or following adjustments. Sticking to soft foods, like smoothies or pasta, can help during those sensitive days. If needed, over-the-counter pain relievers can ease discomfort — just follow the directions. Orthodontic wax is great for covering any brackets or wires that feel rough. Whether you’re at school, work, or traveling, keeping a small care kit with a toothbrush, flossers, wax, and pain relief can help you stay comfortable and prepared wherever you go.

Staying Active & Confident

Braces shouldn’t slow you down — just take a few precautions to stay safe and confident.
